Major and Minor Scales

The two most used scales in typical music are major and minor scales. Below are the intervals and examples of scales.

  • Major Scale

Root - Whole - Whole - Half - Whole - Whole - Half - Whole C - D - E - F - G - A - B

  • Minor Scales

There are three types of minor scales: natural, melodic, and harmonic.

Natural: Root - Whole - Half - Whole - Whole - Half - Whole - Whole A - B - C - D - E - F - G

Harmonic (Natural Minor w/ #7): Root - Whole - Half - Whole - Whole - Half - Whole and Half - Whole A - B - C - D - E - F - G#

Melodic (Natural Minor w/ #6 and #7 ascending, natural descending): Root - Whole - Half - Whole - Whole - Whole - Whole - Half A - B - C - D - E - F# - G#
