Why do we need a contributor policy?

There are two reasons. First, we need to avoid legal problems that could result in the removal of all or a part of the site. We want the site to continue to be a resource for the Stick community for years to come. While intellectual property laws have not always been enforced in the past for Internet sites, owners of intellectual property (copyrights) have become increasingly vigorous in pursuing litigation against sites that they feel violate their intellectual property rights.

Second, we want to provide a good experience for users of the site. All of the major Wiki sites (such as Wikipedia) have policies that help to provide consistency in format, and prevent annoyances such as promotional messages. This has proven to make these sites very friendly to the users.

What are the contributor policies?

  1. You must register and log in order to contribute. We will not sell or give your personal information away, but this policy helps to control vandalism on the site.
  2. Avoid bias. Articles should be written in a neutral point of view, with informing the reader rather than advocacy being the goal.
  3. Don't promote. If there is a resource that would be useful to the community (such as a method book), you may inform readers about it in neutral language, but any promotional material will be removed.
  4. Don't infringe copyrights. Do not contribute any text, pictures, audio or video that is copyrighted. This includes performances of copyrighted songs.
  5. Fair use. You may include a portion of a copyrighted piece of music in music notation or tablature only if:
    • The purpose is educational
    • You only include one portion of the piece (if you include the chorus, do not include the verse or the bridge)
    • The other sections of the piece are not included elsewhere on the site
  6. Respect other contributors. StickiWiki contributors come from many different countries and cultures, and have widely different views. Treating others with respect is key to collaborating effectively in building an encyclopedia of Stick knowledge.
