Pentatonic Scale

A Pentatonic scale is a subset of the diatonic scale. Below is the C major scale and then the C Pentatonic scale.

As you can see, the fourth and seventh tones have been left out. This scale is used heavily in folk music from a variety of countries, and in popular music.

One way of playing the Pentatonic scale is shown below:

Another method, involves using a repeating pattern, which repeats two frets higher each time. Players who use this pattern often slide at the point where the pattern shifts. A diagram of this pattern is shown below:

This scale can also have the "blues" note (the b6) added to make it a blues scale. Below is a similar diagram showing a blues scale:

The pentatonic scale is well suited to soloing over a variety of different styles of music, and is a useful tool for a Stick player to have in his arsenal.
