Once the initial connection is made with the instrument, a realm of possibility is discovered. Some changes occur within perception and awareness. Each moment there are an infinite number of things that could be focused upon. When you put your energy and attention on creativity, you are creating reality consciously. Each song or improvisation has a pronounced influence on your state of being. It goes much deeper than a sad song that makes you sad(ect). Music can bring new ways to feel and new color to absorb.

As the connection to the Stick transpires, it becomes an intricate way to explore the sonic universe. The Stick has a totally unique feel that inspires a new kind of composition. It seems to provoke original concepts that may be complex or harmonically sophisticated, yet the notes blend together in a smooth way. It can go from being percussive and rhythmic to chilled out and peaceful, along with the full spectrum of dynamics. It is really cool to integrate the different approaches and see what happens. The interlocking rhythmic style sounds incredible mixed with larger harmony parts. Slow parts with "outside" notes can be a challenge at first, if the tones sound weird together. It is a process of acquiring taste for the more abstract tonalities. Or, you are totally far out already and play each note in direct accordance with the exact intention of the universal soul. Most of this process is done without consciously thinking. The act of playing in a Zen-like state or just totally having fun will yield very nice results. It can be liberating to know that there are no rules, and to really go for it and play. It is also helpful for the apprentice to utilize theories, math, and new perspectives. There is much to be said about discovering, and exploring. How do we find certain things? Are we drawn to them? It seems that it is a mystery why we choose what we like.
